Soup Studios is a freelance photography studio founded in 2009 by Derek Pfohl. Based out of Central New York, we are committed to telling beautiful stories with beautiful images. We believe photography is like instant time travel; the ability to capture moments of time in the palm of your hand. It is one of the only tangible things in this world that can help you remember and re-live an experience over and over again, forever. Even more impressive, photography is one of the few mediums that can help give the viewer the feeling of that experience, even if they've never experienced it before (especially food).
The philosophy behind our photography is simple: our goal is to deliver a beautiful visual representation of your brand, while helping tell the story of who you are and where you are going. There is beauty in everything, all you have to do is look for it.
Originally from Syracuse, NY Derek grew up in the restaurant industry working and learning in his family's restaurant. All throughout his childhood, Derek always found a creative avenue to be expressive and photography was almost always the way. Roll after roll of film, Derek continued to take pictures, work at the restaurant and enjoy eating food. Many rolls of film, and many meals later, Derek graduated high school and headed to the Big Apple. Once in New York Derek continued his career in the restaurant industry, continued taking photographs and finally it clicked.
As a self-taught photographer, Derek gained experience through working with other photographers, assisting on photo shoots, taking classes, reading mountains of books, constantly working around food and, well - taking photographs.
Today Derek is an accomplished food and product photographer with over 15 years of experience in the food and hospitality industry combined with 10 years of professional photography experience.
